Announcements & Memos for Coaches & Parents:

________________________________

In 2003 the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in Washington D.C. (USCCB) instituted NATIONALLY a safe environment program for children. Each diocese is audited annually for compliance with these national norms and regulations.

In 2003 the Diocese of Metuchen issued regulations echoing the USCCB mandates which have been posted on our diocesan and league websites.

http://www.yandyam.com/YM/sports_bylaws.html

The rules apply to all adults working or volunteering with minors…including coaches.

They include two criteria.

    1. Coaches are required to attend a free Protecting God’s Children (Virtus) training class.
    2. Coaches are required to pass a criminal history background check.

Adults who are not in compliance with diocesan child protection policies are not eligible to coach.

Volunteers requiring a background check should contact their parish background check coordinator immediately by calling their parish office. Coaches may also contact the Diocesan Office of Child and Youth Protection for more information at 732-562-2413.

Teams with suspended coaches are not eligible for playoffs or tournament play.

A note about AOL email

137 out of 534 coaches in our database use AOL email addresses. AOL blocks most diocesan / basketball email announcements to the league as spam. There may often be basketball news that never reaches your AOL inbox.

Considering creating an additional email address for basketball?

FREE EMAIL accounts are available at many websites such as Catholic.org, BasketballEmail.com, Yahoo, and Hotmail.

Please let us know your new email address if you create one for basketball announcements.

Good luck this season!

Dear Coaches and Administrators,

I welcome you to the Diocese of Metuchen’s 2007-2008 CYM Basketball Season. Currently our league is over 270 teams strong and serves over 3,000 children.

The following are points to be noted:

The initial registration packet has been put on the Web: ROSTERS and PERMISSION SLIPS. These materials will not be distributed to the reps at the annual orientation meeting. All documents are available for download on the site for your convenience.

Other very IMPORTANT info, concerning the VIRTUS TRAINING that ALL coaches etc. NEED to take in order to participate and MANDATORY fingerprinting are addressed on the WEB. LOOK AT THE LEAGUE RULES PRIOR TO THE MEETING!!!

2. So, as always, I need Organizational Reps (the one contact person from each organization that I can talk with directly to pass on information to their coaches, players, and parents). Please let me know by e-mail who the Rep is. (I already know who most of you are!!!) Also PLEASE UPDATE ME ON ALL E-MAIL ADDRESSES (ADDITIONS,CORRECTIONS AND DELETIONS ) SO I CAN GET MY ADDRESS BOOK IN ORDER!!!

Concerning the representative, the following is very important:

3. Once again, this season, we will meet with the Organizational Reps ONLY. This Representative meeting will soon be scheduled. WE HAVE NEW, VERY IMPORTANT ISSUES TO ADDRESS AT THIS MEETING. We are asking that the representative bring, preferably, only one other person with them to this meeting. This meeting is MANDATORY. If you cannot attend someone else must be delegated to be there.

REMEMBER: SOMEONE MUST BE IN ATTENDANCE IF YOUR ORGANIZATION IS GOING TO BE INVOLVED THIS YEAR. BECAUSE OF THE MANY BIG ISSUES THAT NEED TO BE DISCUSSED, THERE CAN BE NO EXCUSES FOR NOT ATTENDING. PLEASE PARK IN THE LOT AROUND THE BACK OF THE BUILDING. DIRECTIONS can be found here.

4. The fee schedule will be as follows - $80 per team entrance fee for ALL teams and one $100 bonding fee per NEW organization. Teams outside the Diocese, will have an entrance fee of $100.00 per team.
The Fee deadline is November 1st - NO EXCEPTIONS!

6. We will use E-mail for our weather cancellations along with the web site bulletin board. We will bulk all e-mail addresses together so that we can keep you updated on important last-minute changes and postponements. So please start gathering e-mail addresses and submit them via e-mail asap. CYMBASKETBALL@AOL.COM

7. The starting date for our season will be announced. Holiday closure dates to be announced.

Concerning the representative meeting (date yet to announced), PLEASE SUBMIT REGISTRATION FORMS! Please indicate all teams that you know of from your organization that will compete this year, and also, which teams you are personally involved with, uncertified coaches list, changes in your mailing list and e-mail addresses. Also, GYM AVAILABILITY FOR THE SEASON. League Fees will be GLADLY accepted at this time.

If your registration and gym availability forms are complete prior to the meeting, please call me at 732 972-0080. I can then have you fax it to me or E-MAIL at that time.

Please e-mail me cymbasketball@aol.com and confirm that you will be attending the meeting.

Thank you for your assistance.

Sincerely,

Bob Berger

Memo

Coaches

From: Michael Wojcik, Director for Office of Youth Ministry

Re: New Diocesan CYM Basketball Guidelines

Several weeks ago, my office held a Pastors Forum on Youth Athletics to discuss ways to improve the Diocesan CYM Basketball League. After much discussion, I am announcing the following new guidelines effective immediately:

  1. 1. As per Bishop Paul Bootkoski’s letter of August 27, 2004: no basketball games or practices may be scheduled on Sunday before 1:00 PM. This policy will apply to all teams participating in our Diocesan CYM Basketball League as well as any parish tournaments.
  2. Requirements for player eligibility: All players must be registered members of a parish. All players will be actively enrolled and participating in a CCD religious education program or Catholic School in order to maintain eligibility to play in the Diocesan CYM Basketball League. Anyone eligible to play last year will be grandfathered. This new policy will be phased in for the 3rd and 4th grade levels this year. Certain other exceptions will be permitted with eligibility waivers. Waiver forms available on our website.
  3. As per Diocesan policy regarding any adult working with children or youth, all coaches, assistant coaches, site managers and athletic directors must undergo a criminal background check prior to the start of the 2004-2005 season. Criminal background checks will be completed through the local parish. All coaches, assistant coaches, site managers and athletic directs must attend “Virtus: Protecting God’s Children Training” prior to the start of the 2004-2005 season. Free classes scheduled throughout the diocese are listed in the diocesan website: http://www.diometuchen.org/cyp/cyp_sessions.html

Thank you for all you do to make the Diocesan CYM Basketball League a success!!!! Best wishes for a safe and successful season!
